Benefits of Vitamin C

15 Jul 2021
Benefits of Vitamin C
Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin found mainly in fruits and vegetables. It is important for enhancing skin health and immune function. It’s essential for the formation of collagen, absorption of iron and maintenance of connective tissues. Inadequate intake of vitamin C can lead to bleeding gums, bruising, poor wound healing and anemia. As the human body is unable to produce or store vitamin C, it is important to consume sufficient amounts of vitamin C daily.

Maintain Skin Health

Vitamin C is important for the production of collagen which keeps your skin tight and taut. Loss of collagen and elastic fibre can result in aging of skin and formation of wrinkles. Excessive exposure to UV rays can further weaken the skin tissue. Vitamin C help to reduce damage to the skin by providing protection from harmful UV rays. It has significant impact on repair of skin to improve wound healing.

Prevent Iron Deficiency

Iron is essential for producing red blood cells, and transporting oxygen throughout the body.  Consuming adequate vitamin C helps increase the body’s absorption of iron, and prevents iron deficiency. For those with low iron levels, consuming vitamin C together with intake of iron can help improve blood iron levels.

Immunity Booster

Vitamin C is involved in many parts of the immune system. It protects the body against infection by encouraging the production of white blood cells. These white blood cells also function more effectively and protect the body against damage by free radicals. On the surface, vitamin C plays a huge role in skin health as it strengthens skin barriers and acts as an antioxidant.

Protect The Eyes

Vitamin C is necessary to form collagen, a protein that is beneficial for the maintenance of the cornea and sclera. Several observational studies show that Vitamin C may reduce the risk of developing cataracts.  Vitamin C also acts as an antioxidant to protect your eyes against harmful free radicals. Vitamin C may play a role in slowing the progression of age-related macular degeneration(AMD).

While vitamin C is beneficial for the human body, it is important to have a balanced diet that is rich in a variety of nutrients. There is no need to have excess intake of any particular nutrient. Sufficient amount of Vitamin C can be obtained through daily intake of at least 2 servings of vegetables and 2 servings of fruits. A balanced diet is always crucial to ensure optimal health.
